Life is about choices and we all know that making the right choice is important, but it can be hard to stick with. Most of us are conditioned to make bad choices in our lives. Our brains are wired for instant gratification and this makes us prone to give into temptation instead of sticking with what's best for us.
How often do your decisions change? Are you making life decisions like a nomad or you’re just fixated on one choice? Are you holding on to something that is no longer working for you?
When is the time to let go? Why should you change your choice if it's not working for you?
In the early years our ancestors survived the climate and harsh living conditions by pitching their tents where ever they found pasture for their animals.
You and I have experiences of habits that we know deep down do not serve us and will not lead to our ultimate goal, but why is it difficult to change our choices?
For example, as someone that is working towards losing some more weight, when I opened my fridge this morning to grab breakfast, I was tempted to pick up a bagel, already I know, eating that would not help me reach my goal. I had to make a choice, to substitute my favorite breakfast with something else.
It is not an easy decision, to let go of something that fulfills and satisfies you, for something else you have no idea if it will be sustainable, but life is about choices and the decisions we make.
This is why I relate changing your choice with the life of the nomad farmer, he had to be a leader to get supply for his flock. If you are not consciously leading yourself, by asking the right questions you may stay stuck with a situation because of insufficient knowledge or supply.
You may be staying glue to your situations because they are connected to your brain neurons, and if your experience is the only truth you see, that’s what you will hold onto.
Throughout his month I have been reading about the brain, I picked up a book from my local library on the habits of a happy brain.

Rewire your brain to make a new choice if the old is no longer effective.
As a young infant born into this world, you have a lot of neurons but with very few connections. But as you continue to grow and interact with people around you, you begin to build a sense of identity of who you are. So, this is why your value system and beliefs originate from those around you and your environment.
These connections guided you in making decisions as a young person. But as you grow and interact with many others, outside your social circles, you will suddenly want something else, and want to change your choice.
This is when it gets difficult, because your brain developed your initial wiring for your survival. These wiring were built-in through consistent and continuous experiences that you observe with your 5 senses.
Our brain was made to function like a computer program, so as to make our task feel effortless. If not of this property of our brains makes our day-to-day activity more efficient. Like driving a car, picking up a particular grocery or simple tasks at home.
I have learnt that until you really want something bad enough, that it becomes an emotional feeling, you may not yet ready to change your choice. Think back and reflect on the emotions that guided your changes.
How can you change your choice if it’s not working for you?
Changing your choice is difficult but possible with repetition.

Changing your choice is difficult because your brain wants to stick with what feels safe.
Do you remember how easy it was for you to be influenced when you were a teenager compared to now? Back then your brain, was still developing and you had not experienced the many experiences that has shaped your brain now.
In her book, Loretta Breuning, explains how you can boost your happiness and change your choice in 45 days. she shows you how to use neuroplasticity (your brain's ability) in your favor when trying to change a habit or lifestyle choice. “Repetition gives you power to build any synapses you decide is important. If a synapse is activated many times, it gradually learns to transmit an electrochemical signal efficiently, even without extra rowboats in the fleet"
This is why during my coaching sessions, if I want to help my client become their best self, I help them relieve their younger days of happiness and peace. When they are able to go back to a tine in their life when they had little or no negative experience, they can make a conscious change of choice pathway.
There is hope and restoration for you, if you are ready to choose differently. If you want to have what you want, you must be willing to condition your brain by restricting your actions.
Rewire Your Brain To Make A New Choice If The Old Is No Longer Effective by restricting your actions through repetition until you can break the cycle of bad habits and create new positive ones. Life is about choices and the decisions we make, so choose wisely!
